Well, when I brought this up earlier David Engel mentioned some tests
that he ran:

We have run some tests here on our own local software with similar
results.

David also said that if you actually linked against -lpthread, the
slowdown was much more substantial, but that would only apply for
threaded apps, normal, unthreaded apps would be unaffected.
