Problem compiling custom kernel.

Greetings,

I am having some trouble compiling a custom kernel recently under
Debian. It has always worked flawlessly in the past.

My platform is an up-to-date debian-unstable 486 box, currently running
kernel 2.0.26 (custom built). I have kernel-package 3.10 installed.

I wanted to upgrade to 2.0.27, so I downloaded linux-2.0.27.tar.gz from
ftp.cs.helsinki.fi, untarred it to /var/tmp/linux, copied
/usr/src/linux/.config to /var/tmp/linux, cd'd into /var/tmp/linux,
then ran "make-kpkg -revision custom.1.0 kernel_image".

After asking me for a couple of new configuration options, it churned
for quite a while, then crashed with the following messages:

>chmod 644 debian/tmp-image/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.27 \
> debian/tmp-image/boot/vmlinux-2.0.27 \
> debian/tmp-image/boot/System.map-2.0.27
>dpkg-gencontrol -pkernel-image-2.0.27 -Pdebian/tmp-image/
>dpkg-gencontrol: failure: chown new files list file: Illegal seek
>make: *** [stamp-image] Error 29

Trying it repeatedly fails to produce any change. I have plenty of
filespace left on /var, so that isn't the problem.

What should I do now to create the kernel-image_custom.1.0.deb file I
want?
