glimpse might help (and if I get two argle-bargle minutes to rub
together this week, I'll finish debianizing it), but you run into the
problem of index-vs-catalog.
Indexes, at least the mechanically generated kind, have a nasty and
nearly unavoidable tendency to give you an info-dump (at least in the
presence of a sufficient amount of info), instead of the nice,
carefully constructed list of hits a good catalog can give you.
I think the latter is what Ian's talking about.
