Yes, well, you didn't use the right syntax.

Closes: (Bug)#nnnn, ...

If the pkg is an nmu, the bugs are set to severity fixed.  If it is a regular
upload, they are closed.

But whether you used the wrong syntax or not, was not why Wichert was
upset.  ANY time a bug is fixed by a package, and the maintainer is aware that
the upload is fixing the bug, details should be placed into the
changelog.  This is as bad as doing 

foo (1.23-1) unstable; urgency=low

 * New upstream, fixes 10 debian bugs.
