i don't want to comment on using bz2 - i've got mixed feelings about
that (on the one hand, space savings are important. on the other, being
able to install on low-end 386s with only 4 or 8 MB is also important.
i'm undecided, and unlikely to be adversely affected either way)

the reason i'm writing is that i'm curious to know what the status is
with DVD roms. are they in common use yet? are there reasonably priced
burners available yet? my knowledge of these units is minimal, all i
know is that they are supposed to be multi-gigabyte RO drives.

it's possible that in a year or two, the 650MB limit on CDs won't be an
issue.
