you may want to take a look at some statistics of this area I did.
You will find the output of:
statnews --width=80 --from=17/02/1999 --to=17/03/1999 --spool=Mail/List debian-devel

Not every output section is meaningful for this mailing list
(statnews---which is BTW available as a Debian package---was developed
for FidoNet style echo areas), but still I find it quite interesting.
