It uses a version of "script" hacked to take a command-line rather
than just run the user's shell.

Unfortunately it ends up logging the *entire* install which, while
better than nothing -- and invaluable for troubleshooting -- doesn't
really achieve the objective here, which is to have an easy way of
presenting the installer with the few messages requiring their
attention.

Personally I'm in favour of a log file somewhere, which dpkg could
open on a separate fd:
  echo >&5 Don\'t forget to remove /etc when the installation is finished
