You are making two wrong assumptions here. You assume that I was running over
the Internet (I was using switched full-duplex 100baseT), and you seem to
assume that I don't know how to test things (read some of my previous posts
in debian-isp - a lot of the stuff that's being discussed now about ssh
performance were raised by me years ago with full benchmarks).
Do some tests with files that compress well over a fast network and you'll
find some benefits from compression. The exact benefits vary depending on
CPU, but I am confident that on any combination of CPU and OS transferring
web logs over a fast network is best done with compression.
