when someone writes the code for it.  if star is GPL (i dunno) then

err, what's stopping anyone from installing star?  especially if it is
packaged for debian?  those who want/need the features of star can have
them.  no hassles, no dramas, just install the package and use it.



this thread is yet another pointless instance of "debian sucks because
my favourite new toy isn't the default!!!".  unfortunately,  replacing
gnu tar with star would break a lot of systems for no good reason.  i.e.
the "cure" is far worse than the "disease" it is attempting to fix.

whether it's a good thing or a bad thing, isn't the point.  the fact is
that gnu tar is the standard tar for debian (and all other linux
distributions).  if you prefer some other tar, nothing is stopping you
from using it.
