I'd just like to throw in another theory: 
  Box - Boxen
  Virus - Viren
is correct german (and the like is quite common for forming the plural). So 
  Vax - Vaxen 
is just an application for that scheme, apart from eg Vaxes sounding awful in 
german and still not much better in english ....
