That might be on an entirely remote machine for all you know. The config script is designed[1] only to ask debconf questions. Some of us would like the possibility for it to run on a remote machine from the one that the configuration is eventually used on. The debconf manual already documents the process of running the config script via dpkg-preconfigure and transferring the database out to client machines in various ways. In such a setup the master machine might not even get the package installed on it. Or the config script might hypothetically not be run on the client machines at all. -- see shy jo [1] I could have sworn by you. :-P
