dpkg 2.0, deb format 3.0, dpkg-source v2, .nlist, ...

Those are just a few of the things Wichert and I have in store(and some are
already implemented) for the next version of dpkg.

dpkg 2.0 will support dynamic registration of files.

dpkg will support debconf very well in 2.0.  Wichert and I have big plans.

More on the new dpkg features will be posted to -dpkg first, then -devel,
after things are ironed out.
