I'we written two scripts to save and preload debconf answers.  (I'm
not sure why you want 'a standard method', but I can't give you that.)

Check out debconf-save-answers and debconf-load-defaults from
<URL:http://developer.skolelinux.no/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/skolelinux/src/base-config-skolelinux/tools/>.
The first script will extract the content of the current debconf
database in a format readable by the second script.
