Censorship is bad, but that doesn't mean that I have to let people in
my house make idiot racist jokes. Official organizations have a
responsibility not to dictate limits to speech, but private
individuals get the luxurious right of who they associate with and

I think my point is that there's a very fine line here between having
a Debian policy about "offensive" material and having a maintainer put
his name on a package that's full of ignorant and embarassing blather.
It seems to me that maintainers need to, uh, maintain a level of
comfort for themselves. If the maintainer is pretty dedicated to being
a mere conduit for the upstream author, and not taking responsibility
for the content of the package, fine. If the maintainer is so
dedicated to free speech that they will intentionally leave in racist
remarks, just to make that point, that's pretty cool, too.
But if maintainers decide that a piece of software's pretty damn good,
except for (bad file layout|security bugs|stupid homophobe taglines),
I think it's totally cool for the maintainer to re-arrange things to
be more reasonable.
