Hi Nick!
It's hard to see the point of your post.
Why don't you switch to Red Hat if you're so fond of it and "commercial linux
software" that you use fails to be incompatible with debian? You might also
want to build a subsystem for debian that will provide red hat binary
compatibility. I don't know if such a work has commercial value though.
- From your mail, it seems that we should also drop dpkg while we're at it.
It should also be obvious that Rainer's trouble is Red Hat's fault, not
Debian's.
About Red Hat being practically the standard: Standards are not strictly
based on an existing (and popular) implementation. A linux standard has to be
distribution agnostic (whatever that means). A standard tries hard to define
the "right thing", and then implementors try harder to comply to that
standard.
