That was my point. About breaking the ABI, yes it may break the ABI
but this is not a bad thing when every library is updated. The main
problem is:
  1. How many C++ libraries are there?
  2. How many of them would break under g++-3.0?
  3. Can we update all C++ programs to g++-3.0?

My impression is that most up-to-date C++ libraries will compile
with g++-3.0 which is the way it should be. Older C++ libraries
may fail. All C++ packages should be updated to g++-3.0 sooner
or later, thus the decision to make is when that should be done.
The transition would be much easier if there were a consensus
among developers.
