weird xmms problem

Not sure if this is a bug in xmms, since it still happens if I
downgrade xmms to the one in potato, which used to work for me. (I'm
using xmms-1.2.4-1 on an up to date woody.)

When "playing" .mp3 files, xmms makes no sound and writes them to
.wav files in my home directory. Other .mp3 players work fine. xmms
worked fine up until two weeks ago (but stopped working before I
rebuilt my kernel).

I've searched the mailing list archives and the changelogs but haven't
found any mention of the problem. Any ideas on what to try next?

thanks,

Dennis
