Deep magic.  Or, in my case, a web search.

Actually, PCMCIA can make the drive work just fine on my Vaio Z505S,
but for initial install you need the above parameter to bypass the
need for pcmcia support at install time.  (The floppy drive, being a
USB thing, is not supported at all by Debian.)
