what exactly is a CDD?

Hmm, I had the impression that a custom Debian Distribution is a
specific set of packages, which is comprised of packages from Debian and
some (or many) custom packages, possibly with a preseeding file for
debian-installer and/or debconf etc. Additionally, I thought that a
custom Debian Distribution would always include some sort of
installation media (usually a set of CDs).

When I first read about cddtool (and got a small glimpse of its proposed
features), I thought it would be almost exactly what I need. I will
summarize what I need currently:

I need a tool which allows to create a (set of) CD(s), where I am able
to specify in one way or the other:
- A selection of menu texts for the installation boot CD
- A kernel or number of kernels to include for the boot CD
- the packages available, the packages to definitely install
- debian-installer/debconf preseed file(s)
- a script each to run at various points during installation,
this may be solvable through debconf preceeding:
  - pre debian-installer
  - pre partitioning
  - pre formating
  - pre base install
  - post base install (pre reboot)
  - pre task/package selection
  - pre package installation
  - post package installation (just before final system is passed
    to user)
- possibly an alternate d-i frontend
- additional files (and packages) to include on the CD so that it can
be used by d-i or its alternate frontend
- possibly what the CD is running before d-i is started (such as
  running debxconfigurator && dexconf && X)

Is there any such thing? To be honest, I find the documentation I found
on the net quite difficult to understand and follow.

cu,
sven
