The 0.7.14 of abiword has bugs for Chinese (display/copy-paste). You can
download the cvs version of abiword which has no problem with Chinese.
Try not use Bold/italic with Chinese fonts unless you actually has bold
fonts.
The actual implementation for Chinese (CJK) is more like a hack. After
1.0, the things should move to pango and there will be no special treatement
for Chinese. There are no much different between latin and cjk characters
to abiword. But I don't think much architectural change will be added
before that.
To actually use Chinese with abiword, read below. I know it is weird to have a
document for abiword cjk in English, please translate it. :)

Abiword use X's font for display and type1 for printing. It actually uses ttf
for CJK printing thanks to hj's work on this part. Chinese printing is only
supported in gtk version of abiword with patched ghostscript. Ghostscript has
to be patched to support CJK printing with true type fonts (gs-cjk project).
To display Chinese (e.g. zh_CN.GB2312), you have to:
1) put a fonts.dir in your ${abisuite}/fonts/locale-spec/.
Where locale-spec is:
lang-territory.encoding (zh-CN.GB2312) or,
lang-territory (zh-CN) or,
encoding (GB2312)
Please note it uses '-' instead of underscore '_'.
Debian's ${abisuite} is /usr/share/abisuite.
2) set your LANG environment to your preferred locale.
If you want English menu, you can set LC_MESSAGES to C.
This can be set manually or done inside your 'abiword'
script which will call the actual binary.
3) sit back and enjoy.
The fonts.dir format is just like native X fonts.dir except
it has trailing numbers for font ascend, descend and width.
The leading font names like "Song-Medium-GB-EUC-H" are fontnames
used for postscript printing. Where GB is charset, EUC is encoding
and H means horizontal if you want to know postscript fontname.
To find out font information, please do:
xlsfonts -ll -fn "fontname"
