Comments/Problems:

My Toshiba A200 laptop was stolen by Brazilian thieves. HP were
running a Xmas special
deal to unload these Compaq's, so I bought one. Both memory chips
failed and had to be replaced.
I had an old 5.0.5 install CD and it advised using an amd64 version.
So I downloaded an iso image and then spent a few hours locating a
windoze program to unpack the image and then copy the files to a blank
CD.
The installation ran overnight given the large quantity of packages
that had to be downloaded.

Problem # 1
I wanted to keep the windoze 7 starter set-up in a separate partition
so that I could use Skype there, given the problems one has running
Skype under Linux. Now that the dark side have purchased Skype, I
can't imagine it improving.
However, when I re-booted, there was no windoze in the grub list. I
ran update-grub but it made no changes.

Problem # 2
The keyboard preferences can't be saved. In the <layout> tab of
keyboard "manager" it shows Brazil and United Kingdom. After I boot
up, I have to manually remove United Kingdom in order for the keyboard
to function per the characters appearing on the key pad. Rather
difficult to use vi when you don't have a working ":" character.

Problem # 3
dhcp was installed, not dhcp3. I always thought that dhcp3 was the
latest version. isc.org list version 4 as the current version. I need
to reject offers from 187.65.0.0/16 and force it to obtain a lease
from 189.4.0.0/16. These are the two inet ranges assigned to
virtua.com.br. If I'm assigned a 187.65 IP address I can't communicate
with my ISP in Australia.

Problem # 4
Changed my sources.list to use testing. There was a typo in the
sources.list left by the installer. On one of the lines there is a
space between non and the hyphen. It should be non-free but appears as
non -free. Be that as it may, I wanted to upgrade the installed
version of synaptic. However packages libapt-inst1.2 and
libapt-pkg4.10 are both missing. According to the documentation, these
are created via apt-utils. I re-installed apt-utils but nothing
changed. There is another broken package but I can't find out its
name. It is revealed if you try to update iceweasel, for example.

<Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.>

Given that it is practically impossible to buy a new laptop these days
without already having windoze 7 starter pre-installed (except HP do
have a Suse pre-installed laptop available), and given the facilities
offered by grub, I believe that the installer should make it easier to
partition the hard drive in a more user friendly fashion, so that if
one wishes to keep a working windoze available, one may do so. At no
point did the installer mention that a windoze boot record/image was
found.

Regards,
Rob Stone

thanks

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they were caused by broken hardware and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
        Holger
