Package: installation-reports Severity: normal Duel boot computer with Windows XP (SP3) and Debian lenny 5.0.4 already installed. Ethernet connections: Realtek controller (motherboard) -> Internet D-Link controller (separate card) -> LAN Installer mode: expert (text) For the most part the installation process went smoothly except for the following: 1) Initial failure to detect ethernet controllers It took several attempts to get the installer to find the controllers. In each case the progress bar would show then the installer would freeze on a blank screen. The system had to be rebooted in each case. Only after rebooting into the installer from Windows XP did the installer find both controllers and the installation proceeded to completion. Conjecture: I was using Debian lenny before attempting the install and found it was prone to freezing on start-up. Powering down the computer would clear the problem. lenny would also leave the Realtek controller still powered up after shutdown (the modem ethernet light remained on). Windows XP turned it off at shutdown. So I suspect the lenny power down procedure was either improperly configured or faulty, leaving some hardware active and in an indeterminate state. This interfered with the squeeze installer's hardware detection. Notably absent from the nForce2 driver installed by XP is SMBus support, though it is present in an earlier version of the driver found at the NVidia web site. I will see what squeeze does before filing this as a separate bug report. 2) Missing Debian lenny and Windows XP entries in the Grub 2 boot menu The installer detected both lenny and XP, then indicated they would be included on the boot menu. But only the squeeze items are on the menu. Hi, thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated. I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if - they (finally) indicated success and/or - I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in Wheezy and/or - they only contained very little information and/or - they contained user errors and/or - they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or - they are very old, more than 2.5 years. If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft. cheers, HolgerAttachment: signature.asc
