Now I have a workable interim-solution. The first problem, that occured, was a non displayable graphics-mode at x-server initialization, so it turned out, that the non-free RADEON-firmware clearly does not work for me an I have to use the fgrlx-legacy blob from AMD. The desktop-environment itself was usable, but ther was flashing and complaining about a non-displayable graphics-mode at x-server initialization, virtual terminals also were unusable and I was not able to find a kernel-boot-option to provide a different workaround for this. So my solution is to return to the fgrlx-legacy blob. At some point towards the end of the Squeeze-lifetime and the Wheezy-freeze, the blob-version I used broke and I found that using the non-free RADEON-firmware works equally well. Now I am unsure again, if this is actually nagging me, that I should buy an additional graphics-card and say goodbye to using the outdated RADEON_3200 onboard-solution, which I want to do anyway, but not at once. Then one other reason for reinstallation was a broken desktop-environment, seemingly because I dared to remove iceweasel from my system. It is a bit unclear for me now, how to set up a custom Firefox- and Thunderbird-version. Do I have to remove the deferring symlinks or something ? The versions present in my home-directory were not workable at all. It is positive of course that Firefox-ESR-v17 made its way into Wheezy stable, violating the debian-principles, but it should be possible though to use versionf from Mozilla directly. The other positive thing, was that it is now possible to choose english language and a german locale, when installed additionally in expert mode. I kept my /home/ partition from the Squeeze-system I used before, the only problem with that was, a failing GNOME-login with a message like '.ICEauthority-file could not be updated', that seemed to be a permissions problem with the file itself and also my home-folder that contained it, a minor issue. Now finally I ended up with a btrfs-filesystem on a 300x speed SD-card in a USB2-cardreader as /-filesystem. The base system and the standard-system-utilities are not compressed, but upon booting into the new system, I added 'compress=zlib' to /etc/fstab and then installed the desktop-environment and virtually all applications, I will ever need, and it took up only 35% of the 16GB flash memory. I saw two crashes, similar to kernel-panics when shutting down, probably cause by not yet productive-state btrfs and also the installation-speed is quite poor. The reason why I tried this in the first place was not to save disk-space, but trying if this might actually increase disk-performance and bypass the USB2-bottleneck of 35MB/s. Now I removed the compression-mount-option from /etc/fstab again and this will result in a gradually decompressing filesystem using up more disk space when compressed files are replaced by uncompressed updates, that may come in in the future. The read-speed does not seem to be lower than without compression, not trying to mesure it at this time. But the write-speed is quite poor with compression enabled, this is my main reason for turning it off again. This is a normal PC with a three times 2 GHZ CPU, but it does compression and decompression very slowly though it could do it faster. The system monitors show a CPU-load of mostly below 50% while reading or writing from or to the root-filesystem, loading each core to about 20% only. This means that each core remains at 1 GHz, although it could rut at twice the speed, also when nothing else is to do. The upside of this is that it hardly impacts overall system performance, the downside ist, that package-installations and writing in general are very slow and read-performance also could be better, because either btrfs or the kernel do not properly make use of the power the system would be able to provide. So overall a count of three minor issues and two reinstallations in two days might add up to one normal issue, wouldn't they ? You see, the result is loads of text so it does not matter if I also add a software-wishlist-item at the end of it: a CPU-frequency-scaling monitor, like it used to exist in GNOME2 is missing in GNOME3 and also in cairo-dock, that provides the state of every single core, possibly providing a way of changing the CPU-frequency-scaling-policy in userspace. A real SSD and an additional graphics-card are at the top of my hardware-wishlist now. USB-attached SD-cards do not provide real multithreading or any other nice SATA-feature, but it is worth a try. - -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report. Dear bug-submitter, thank you for installing debian and for sending an installation report. Usually, thats much appreciated. But yours, consisting of a wall of 54 lines of text, all in one single paragraph of text. Thats incomprehensible. Don't be afraid of adding to many paragraphs, like you can in this mail, the content still stays readable. And please, also try to file seperate bug reports for seperate issues in future. Thanks.
