Bug#685634: installation-reports
Package: installation-reports
Boot method: <How did you boot the installer? CD? floppy? network?>
netinst CD
Image version: <Full URL to image you downloaded is best>

from http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
Date: <Date and time of the install>
Aug 21 2012 about 2pm EST
Machine: <Description of machine (eg, IBM Thinkpad R32)>
IBM Thinkpad T60p
Processor: T2500 2.00GHz stepping 8
Memory: 1 GB
Partitions: <df -Tl will do; the raw partition table is preferred>
(I don't know how to copy the partition table from fdisk, so this is
from df -Tl; before install the 500G disk had sda1, 100G type83 and 20G type 82 only;
the wheezy install is on sda5 and the swap partition, sda2, was converted to ext4.)

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it
First attempt, non-graphic installer:
Initial boot: [O ]
Detect network card: [O ]
Configure network: [O ]
Detect CD: [O ]
Load installer modules: [O ]
Detect hard drives: [O ]
Partition hard drives: [O ]
Install base system: [O ]
Clock/timezone setup: [O ]
User/password setup: [O ]
Install tasks: [E ]
stopped with 'Invalid release file: no entry for contrib/binary-i386/Packages'.
At this point I returned to the 'Partition hard drive' step, erased the new partition, and
partitioned the disk again. Then the 'Install base system' step failed to complete and I
aborted the install.
Install boot loader: [ ]
Overall install: [ ]
Second attempt, graphic installer:
I started the install from the beginning and chose the graphic installer. This time
everything worked. Even though I told it to erase the partition (actually 2, since it made
a logical partition and therefore there was a number 3 and a number 5 where there originally
had been number 1, with squeeze, and number 2, swap) on this second try I was not asked for the
non-free firmware from removable media as I had been on the first. Perhaps that is because
the firmware is stored elsewhere than the hard drive. I don't understand that detail however.
See below for further remarks about this.

Comments/Problems:
<Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.>
a) I do not know what went wrong the first time. I tried the graphical installer
in part because I had never previously used it. I was quite surprised to find that
it made a difference.
b) I was prepared for the non-free firmware request because I needed it for the
squeeze install. It seems to me that would be a pretty mysterious message even
for a relatively sophisticated user.
c) That firmware (iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode and -2.ucode) was for the thinkpad's wifi
card. It got my hopes up that the wifi would be working after the install
was finished, but it was not. (wlan0 is shown, with the correct MAC address, by
ifconfig, but it does not have an ipaddress.)
I suppose you've heard this before, but it sure
would be a boost to Debian if the user did not have to know the details of
configuring wireless in order to get his or her computer on the net. I have
still not made it work.
d) The messages about grub in the bootloader step were helpful but still
required a lot of the user. For example the statement that 'you might have to tell
grub about .....' might benefit from a reference to a good grub recipe site.
(http://dedoimedo.com/computers/grub-2.html#mozTocId16468 helped me.)
And since the things one has to tell grub about are quite specific to the
kernel that the installer has just installed, does it make sense to replace
the generic grub hint with the specific kernel and initrd filenames that
have just been installed?
The grub 1 replacement by grub 2 could be mentioned as well, especially since the
disk numbering convention has been changed.
And finally, thank you for all this work!!
