This is a netinstall image, which does not contain desktop packages.
Tasksel is in charge of selecting the proper desktop.
Actually, I just tried and could not reproduce this.
Can you check the image you downloaded with MD5SUMS?
From <http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.0/i386/iso-cd/MD5SUMS> you
should get:
