This is actually fixed by the following:

			# Colons not allowed; replace by spaces
			# Accented characters (non UTF-8) cause debconf to
			# hang, so we fall back to the default if the name
			# contains any weird characters.

That's however a bit poor, so cloning a wishlist bug. Phcoder suggested
on irc to use bootfont.bin to know the encoding, possibly simply through
a hash table of well-known font files.
