Comments/Problems:
I had a problem setting up the net connection for the installation with
DHCP (message said "your network is probably not using the DHCP
protocol. Alternatively, the DHCP server may be slow or some network
hardware is not working properly". In my case the server was too slow I
think. I did try several time as the Installation Guide suggests but in
the end I solved the problem by setting the Modem/router to act as a
Modem and I retried the installation loading the ppp-udeb module at boot
and doing the installation via PPPoE.
I'd say the installation went fine for me. I am very happy and using my
new "used" laptop. I am not sure though my opinion would be widely
accepted since I had to manually install all the graphical system:
package xorg, then gnome-core, iceweasel and other packages I wanted.
Somehow the task selection of the graphical desktop didn't work. I don't
think it was an installer problem, but an aptitude error. The real
problem in my opinion is that there was no visible error message
whatsoever.
It looked like everything went fine but the desktop was not
installed. It would be nice if the user was notified that some packages
were not installed.
In the end manually doing "tasksel install gnome-desktop --new-install"
I could see a message "aptitude ha dato errore (255)". (roughly
"aptitude gave an error (255)")
As I said I am overall very happy with the install, it was much easier
than I expected and easier than the previous installations I did. I was
promptly notified I needed not free firmware for the wireless card and I
was able from the start to put it on a USB pen so that I could have used
it for the installation (if I had access to a wireless connection, that
is).
