If this is so, then yes - AltGr is far from useless. :) But I believe
that this use of Alt-gr is not possible with the standard us layot. Can
you confirm that you use the standard 'us' layout. Does AltGr still
work if you issue the command
setxkbmap us -option lv3:ralt_switch
(the option is to make the right Alt work as AltGr)

My personal opinion is the same as yours and not only for us but for all
layouts. However it seems one of the goal of d-i is to make the
questions as few as possible. I will implement in console-setup
whatever is decided here.
