OK.
I tried this:
Debian GNU/Linux testing "Lenny" - Official Snapshot i386 NETINST
Binary-1 20080901-09:34
Now I can boot without using "irqpoll" with other sata ports than 5 and 6 (I used 1 and 2). So it seems to be fixed.
So far the only distro that has worked without "irqpoll" and with any sata port combination has been Slackware (
2.6.24.5).

Could you try a daily built image and see if that last issue is still
present? It might be solved in the more recent kernel (2.6.26) that it
uses.
