It seems that this and a couple of other problems are entirely
unconnected with the install process.
It turns out that the two devices are not where I expected.
even running /dev/MAKEDEV hda
did not result in /dev/hda, /dev/hda1 etc. being created.
I finally found
/dev/.static/dev/hdd
MAKEDEV said the files were created, and that is where both
hda and hdd were found.
With that sorted I can prepare and execute a fresh install.
Thanks for your help, and if there are other things I should
check for in the new install, please let me know within the
next few days.
