Hm, not entirely sure, but booting "expert" instead of just pressing return
gives you the choice whether to scan for hw or not. There are several
stages of hw detection, and I have not tried to avoid it. But I remember
this question. Try that anyway ... but be warned that the number of
questions increases quite a bit.
