FWIW, this is all due to netcfg calculating default values for these things based on the ip address and other info. It's tricky to do that and allow for preseeding too; one way would be for netcfg to skip changing the values if the question already has a non-empty value. It's possible this would lead to issues when re-doing the network configuration though. -- see shy jo
