At which boot?  Boot from floppy?

Does the kernel detect the device?

I don't really know the answer.  I suspect that if you are trying to
boot into a RAID device per se, and the hardware isn't faking out the
BIOS into thinking it is one drive, then this is really not supported
by the boot-floppies (we'd need initrd).
