I've been using xcdroast and 2.6 (32 bit) for quite a long time.
You have the option to use the ATA transport or directly /dev/hdx

I've left xcdroast because I bought a DVD burner and xcdroast uses  
cdrecord to burn cd and dvd and there is the problem with the cdrecord  
licence and dvd. Other GUI uses growisofs for DVD
