Hi Patrick.

Post the output of:

# cat /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

so we can see your config file.
also post your video card model and information (just for fun & just in case):

:~$ lspci|grep VGA or just:  :~$ lspci

Also, meanwhile try using:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86    This method is a little more up to date I 
believe. (as opposed to xf86config).

unless you are using Xorg instead of xfree86, in which case I wouldn't know 
what to suggest.
