OK, the preliminary results are in :-)

The debs need freetype but I was able to get that built.  xutils deps on
cpp-3.2 which of course doesn't exist.   Other than that, it works.

Scratch that.  This is going in.  Just make sure you bump the version
number.  Future builds should be versioned like this:

4.2.1-16.0.1
4.2.1-16.0.2

etc, etc.  This is the "binary NMU" scheme reserved for situations just
like this.
