I find 2.6 to be quite usable on older x86 and PPC hardware, but last I looked it had some problems on alpha (like "kernel panics if you used ext3" kind of problems). I'm not sure if they're fixed, my Alpha hasn't been powered up in a while because of the noise and heat it generates :-/ Cameron.
