Have you tried to boot from up-to-date Woody CDs? 2.2.18 is quite aged
and there are other, erm, important bugs in it...

At all, I wouldn't any longer recommend to install Potato. While it's
quite good, some parts are really aged (as is the 2.2.18 kernel you're
using) and thus, there are some problems). Better try what's up to date.

If it doesn't work at all, I'll volunteer to build you a kernel which
you should be able to install your box.
