Did you build a 2.4.18 generic kernel, or specific for LX?

If specific for LX, AND you boot from SRM, make SURE to answer the
"'Use SRM as bootloader" as YES.

Interrupt processing is done differently in the kernel if booting from
SRM as opposed to MILO.
