This happens both with the Debian cdrecord package and with a version
I built from source.

A web search would have told you that something like

echo 8388608 > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax

will help.

Indeed. Actually, I had to edit the kernel sources to change SHMMAX to 16 MB. Also, atleast in my instance, the Debian package doesn't work with my system and/or drive. The version I built works fine on the new kernel. Is 16 MB enough to avoid problems in future? If not, what do you recommend? Will this also be neccessary using a 2.4 kernel?
