RE: Alpha CD images on x86

Yes, I download and burn Alpha CD images on an x86 all the time.

Are these ISO images? If so, then there really should be no reason that Nero
can't see them. ISO is just that, standards across all platforms. I have not
heard of Alpha CD's being only 600mb, they read my Toshiba Certified Plus
650mb CD's just fine.

You can pretty much expect with reasonable certainty that the memory in just
about every alpha is different from x86, even other alphas. A general rule
of thumb is that alpha memory is ECC, parity-based, etc.

You can use the hardware for the most part, video is interchangeable, NIC's,
again, for the most part are interchangeable between the platforms. Alpha's
do not support USB, I have not tried sound cards. I have a couple Miata's
here and they have built-in sound cards. That would be a good test to see if
sound cards work in Alpha computers or not, if you do test, I would expect
to see detailed test results posted.

The best hardware combo that I have found is a Matrox (any generation) PCI
video, and a DE500 (21140, or "Tulip" Chipset) That will get you support in
X, and get you on a network.

Subject: Alpha CD images on x86

Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to create Alpha cd images with an x86
platform computer? If so, I'm using Nero burning rom to do this with, but
the images aren't selectable in the burner program, they don't exist. Is it
true the cd drives in the Alpha are 600mb, and would there be some sort of
conflict between the platforms and creating the cds?

And, can anyone tell me if the memory in the Alpha 1200 is proprietary? I
can't get a straight answer out of anybody.

Can I use the hardware (i.e. video card, NIC) out of an x86 machine?

Thanks in advance
