First attempt of compiling kernel

I have a PWS433au and Woody.
make-kpkg --arch=alpha kernel_image
(I put arch, because it complains about there is no alpha-none on
somewhere else) fails  with  alpha-linux-gcc/ld/ar not found.
Am I missing anything?
I have installed kernel-headers, kernel-source, kernel-package
