And you do have a FPU, otherwise you wouldn't have got that far. Two things to
try: use another kernel (2.0 preferably, or up to 2.1.101, don't use 2.1.105
as this will break Debian package installation). Or try bypassing parts of the
later boot stages by (for example) removing the link to bootmisc.sh from
/etc/rcS.d - use the ramdisk for that. 

Just to narrow down what might hang your machine, not as a solution. I've never
seen a IIci, they arenot particular weird machines from what I hear, but maybe
all people using then so far have a video card and don't use the builtin 
video, that might make a difference.
