With Lite-On 811S, growisofs can't change write speed

With Lite-On 811S (firmware HSOP), Philips 2.4x DVD+R media, and
dvd+rw-tools-5.17.4.8.6, growisofs option "-speed=1" fails. Leaving option
out, disk seems to write OK.  Any ideas?
