2 - Some of us prefer to use open source software.3 - dvdrecord still works well for some hardware, including mine. I would use other software but I'm tired of having programs tell me I have CD media in the drive because they don't like the DVD vendor code (probably a random number) while dvdrecord seems to either like it or be too stupid to check. In any case, it works.
