I checked and am running growisofs v5.13.  So I downloaded and compiled
kernel 2.4.23 (released over the weekend).  And as you say the problem
just dissapeared.  As you say - probably an IDE chipset thing.  So now I
can report full x8 speed with the PX-708A and Verbatim disks (the disks
say x4 but the drive runs them at x8).

How can I support growisofs and related things.  Developers need hard-
ware and beer last time I checked.
