growisofs(v5.12): Curren write speed <-> write Speed#0

Hi, 
i've interesting issue, but lets start with the specs 
drive is Sony DRU-500A latest firmware 2.0f 
the media used was 10pack Ritek 4x speed repackaged by Primeon 
dvd+rw-tools 5.12.4.7.4 
cdrtools 2.01-a18 
linux-2.4.22 
 
Problem description: 
 yesterday i burnt several DVD-R (without rebooting) using k3b 
 on the 2nd media i got Power Calibration error & i had to switch to lower
speed(1x) 
 in order to use the media(k3b allows only speed= auto or 1x) 
 when i burned the next 2 DVD although the media was 4x and i used auto it
was burnt at 1x 
i then tried dvd+rw-mediainfo and got 
  MediaID:               RITEKG04 
  Current Write Speed:   1.0x1385=1385KB/s 
  Write Speed #0:        4.0x1385=5540KB/s 
 so i just passed -speed=4 to growisofs & it did switched to 4x speed, 
 the next DVD-R's was written @ 4x without specifing "-speed=4" 
 
 i assume the write speed is stored somewhere, and if its specified once 
 its used without further test even if auto is selected (==  no -speed
parameter) 
 so until one reboots or specify -speed he'll continue to burn @ 1x 
  
today  i got the same Power Calibration error in k3b, 
tried growisofs --speed=4 ...  on the same media from cmd  
and it worked without a problem 
 
Questions: 
1.) 
    does growisofs try to set Max write speed on every run, 
    or if once the -speed is specified, growisofs continues to use 
    this speed (without tring to set Max speed) until user specifies 
   -speed again 
 
2.) (sorry to ask it :( ) 
    what is the growisofs error code & message in such cases 
   (i wanted to add a messege to k3b, smth like 
    "Power Calibration failed: Please try setting speed manualy") 
    and as i'm dumb, i didn't save the growisofs error code :(
