Yup, It is the only way to accomplish the stated goal of the -a option -- not having dead server side processes accumulate over time due to lack of disconnect before reboot at the client end, while at the same time guaranteeing 100% uptime at the client end when the clients are idle for stretches longer than the -a allows for.
So, if you won't call it a bug or a design flaw the way it is, perhaps you might call the -a merely a feature that needs a keep-alive pulse in order to meet the stated purpose in a high availability with long idle stretches environment?
