Heh - responding to my own post again..

FYI, even though Usenet subscriptions have largely been dropped by the major ISPs,
at least in the US, there are several free Usenet servers available[1,2] plus Google
Groups for the console-impaired. And the lynx browser that so many use for Gopher
also does NNTP[3] so can move seemlessly between Gopher and Usenet.

[2] http://www.eternal-september.org/ - registration required

[3] some lynx(1) Usenet URL examples:

    news://news.aioe.org/ - main dir at aioe.org
    nntp://news.aioe.org/ - same as above
    nntp:/sci.misc - access sci.misc group via NNTPSERVER:dom.nntp.server set in ../lynx.cfg
or set as shell variable, ie. NNTPSERVER=news.eternal-september.org
