Re: [gopher] GopherCon 2016

Hello everyone,  great news!

Looks like a GopherCon teleconference will happen this summer.  There are currently 9 signatures on the petition, and as others get word, there may even be a couple more.

We will figure out the best time, and if we'll do it during a weekend or a weekday.  I figure a Saturday or Sunday afternoon would suit most people best.

I will work on a couple gopher moles this evening to allow us to manage GopherCon.  Such as a place where presenters can opt in, and provide their details.  And a gopher mole to manage each talks question and answer segment.

Presenters should have prepared by this summer a gopherhole equipped with any resources they may wish to showcase during their presentation, such as slide images, downloadable examples, text documents, etc...  I'm sure everyone would agree that said content should be placed in gopherspace, so please, no external links to HTTP, although most clients can display HTML pages, I'll leave that to the discretion of the presenter as it may be appropriate for their presentation.

For North American attendees, there will be both a call in number, and a gopher mole which will call your number and add you into the virtual conference room.  For our friends across the pond, I will put up a WebRTC client, which will have a gopher link.  I may consider putting together a GopherCon android app, which could also be used to connect into the conference if anyone is interested in that option.

More details and gopherholes will be posted as we get closer to spring.

Yes, the last official GopherCon was back in the 90s if I recall correctly.  Search Veronica for GopherCon to learn more.

I have put up a gopher mole petition to get signatures for those interested in
participating in a GopherCon 2016!  I know it's a bit of a short notice, but I
figure it will take place in the summer and will be a teleconference GopherCon,
rather than a huge in-person event.  I have placed more details on how it will
progress on the mole's page.  If you have any comments, suggestions,
questions, and/or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

If enough signatures are gathered, then we will go through the planning from
there.  Such as looking for presenters to present their gopher related
projects and/or content.  Ideas for presentations could be how to install and
configure gopher servers in various operating environments, to history lessons
on gopher from when you were younger, and how much gopher was different back
them, to best practices on creating an optimum gopher server layout.  I look
forward to hearing all your suggestions and potential presentation ideas.

I would hope that Cameron Kaiser would be a presenter to talk about his long
experience with the gopher protocol, and his efforts at keeping floodgap alive
all of these years.
